Fall asleep faster with Slumber.
An app to help users find and
create their perfect night time routine.
Problem:
People need a way to have better sleep with an alarm that is more reliable because they want to be able to function throughout their daily routine and have a better sleep schedule.
Hypothesis:
We believe that by creating a smart alarm device that assists with sleep in many ways, we will increase the user's sleep quality.
We will know this to be true by increased activity on the app and reviews on the app store.
Duration: ~3 weeks

Research.
In order to understand how to ensure people can get enough sleep, reduce stress, and have a healthy bedtime routine, I conducted a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews with three individuals. The survey and interviews aimed to pinpoint where their sleep health needed improvement and what was already working.
84%
of people agree that stress and their daily life affects their sleep and mood.
47%
of people agree that they are not happy with their sleep or their sleep routine.
77%
of people agree that their lack of sleep affects their daily routines and mood.
46%
of people feel that it takes them a long time to fall asleep.
50%
of people agree that methods like meditation help them fall asleep quicker and better.
45%
of people disagree that they feel well-rested when they wake up in the morning.
Competitive Analysis.
After doing our research, it was time to look into the companies and applications that were going to be our biggest competitors. We made a list of everything Slumber needed to be exactly what our users wanted and looked at what our competition was offering.

Personas.
Based on our research, we created two personas from our qualitative interviews. These two personas represent two people struggling to find what they need and our team will use these personas to drive us forward to create an app that has everything they are looking for.

User Flow.
To understand our users' needs, we created a user flow to help us understand their process of finishing an important task on our app. Here you will see the user finding a sound, favoriting it, and setting an alarm.

Style Tile.
Next, we created a style guide that represents our personality and gives Slumber a brand name. We used a mix of cool and warm tones and calming purples to tell our users that we are focusing on calming their sleep routine.

Mid-Fidelity Wireframes.
Our mid-fidelity wireframes show our sketches come to life. We took what our users asked for and created an app that gives them what they need. All we need to do now is add color, images, and design to create the sleep app for all users.
High-Fidelity.
Our high-fidelity mockups show our mid-fidelity wireframes in full color with designs and images. These are our final app screens before we do user testing and find any flaws or hiccups in our design.
Prototype.
While creating Slumber, we also created a prototype to show our developers and users what exactly this dashboard will look like and what features it will have. We also used this prototype to create tasks and asked for users' opinions for feedback to create a better app.
Results.
We tested 5 users and asked them to onboard themselves onto the app. We asked them to find different areas and asked them to complete tasks that we felt were crucial to solving the user problem.
Tasks:
-
Sign up and connect the Bluetooth device
-
Go to the dashboard, find sounds, and select Rain
-
Go to the sleep section, set an alarm, and choose an alarm sound
-
Browse your profile and then log out
Feedback and Suggestions:
User 1: Thought some of the buttons were small and hard to find, especially the info button for the projector
User 2: Wished the onboarding screens were first before the sign-up page so they could better understand the app features and bluetooth
User 3: Liked all the features, especially the projector
User 4: Wished there was more information about the features, wasn't sure how to use it
User 5: Wished there was a "save alarm" tab
Reflections and next steps:
-
Create more feature pages like the lamp and add more information on how each feature works
-
Improve existing features like the alarm, projector, sleep tracker, and sounds
-
Improve the design overall and add more interactions with the prototype
